Working Title: Generation of Higher Learning Members: Helena Esdaile, Dominique Spooner, Sarah Popek, Samantha Antona
1. Concept: The concept of this documentary is to explore the world of students who are pursing higher education while being the first people in their family to do so. We would like to explore the trials or tribulations they might encounter as well as the triumphant moments they come across while trying to acquire a college degree. Being a first generation college student means that no one in the subject's family has pursued a college education or succeeded at an attempt to gain a college degree. Therefore, their family members cannot relate to the experience, which may be causing the student to take on more challenges than a student who has college-educated parents who can guide them on their college experience. The first generation college student is unique and different from his/her second or third-generation college peers, making this a unique documentary. To diversify the content of the documentary, we would like to tell the story of a first generation foreign exchange student, an African-American student, and a Caucasian student.
2. Techniques to work on: - Acquiring B-roll to match the content of the interview -Good use of swish pans -Being as much as a fly on the wall as possible - Obeying the ten second rule
3. Actors/Subjects: For the subjects, we decided to have three subjects in which we will cut between during each episode. There cannot be an episode in which we do not cover all three all subjects. We will interview each subject one day, watch and listen to the content of the interview, and shoot b-roll to match key points of the video we would like to highlight.
4. Equipment needed: XLR Cable, XLR to mini adapter, camera, M64 MIC, Boom pole, tripod, tripod plate, batteries.
5. Possible locations: Work place of subject (if they have a work place), classroom, student activity center, home of subject, main campus buildings they may frequent, residence hall they may live in, and subway or bus if they happen to take public transportation.
6. Other logistics (releases, scheduling conflicts, etc.): We all acquired each other’s contact information to keep each other abreast of each other’s schedule. The next step was to acquire the schedule of the subjects. Whatever time worked for all crew members as well as the subject was the day in which we would film. If someone cannot make it we will make sure that, that person’s position can be covered. Building release forms will be acquired as needed.
Feedback, concerns, or predictions Group Member 1: Helena Esdaile
I believe that this project will go well. We have our subject ready to do the interview this week. We have reserved equipment for the shoot. My only concern now is to get a date set to shoot b roll and to also edit. We have a great group and are good at communicating with each other so i believe setting dates to work on this project will not be to hard.
Group Member 2: Sarah Popek
I am a little concerned about the scheduling aspect of this project - I know we are all busy, so coordinating our schedules with that of our subjects will be tricky to say the least. However, I really love our concept and since we will be shooting on and around campus, we should have a little bit more flexibility in terms of releases and scheduling.
Group Member 3: Samantha Antona
I'm really excited about this project, an idea is always good when subjects and B-roll ideas are already in mind. Our greatest challenge will be coordinating our schedules so that hopefully all of us can be there for the whole process, but I think between the four of us we have people who are experienced in all different areas and it will turn out well!
